Lost in Austen: Create Your Own Jane Austen Adventure

Growing up, I enjoyed reading create-your-own-adventure books, so when I saw Emma Campbell Webster's book, Lost in Austen: Create Your Own Jane Austen Adventure, I was very excited to add it to my list for the Everything Austen Challenge. The book is a lot of fun and includes characters from many of Austen's novels. You play Elizabeth Bennet, and your mission is to make an advantageous marriage. Throughout the book you are quizzed on Regency trivia, and your answers decide the next stage of your journey.

ModCloth Dresses

I have read many posts where bloggers rave about the dresses at ModCloth, and I have to agree that the dresses are cute and well priced. My only complaint is that, because there is such a limited quantity, the dresses are sold out by the time I am ready to buy.

Lost in Austen

If you have ever wished you could step inside Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, you will probably like Amanda Price, the heroine of the UK miniseries Lost in Austen. When Amanda accidentally switches places with Elizabeth Bennet, it is up to Amanda to put the story to rights. Watching this movie for the Everything Austen Challenge was a lot of fun; I only wish the US version was the same as the UK series - why cut the Downtown number?

Holiday Gift Ideas

I can't believe Thanksgiving is this week. The holiday season has snuck up on me, and I haven't done any Christmas shopping yet. I am hoping that Black Friday will offer some major shopping deals, but the last couple of years have been disappointing... and who wants to get up at 4 a.m. for a camera anyways?
Because I love gift giving guides, I have put together a few collections which I hope will spark some creative ideas for you.

Gift Ideas for Bloggers

When shopping for the blogger in your life look for fun gadgets such as the Hello Kitty USB flash drive or a digital camera. Also, Moleskin notebooks are wonderful for jotting down notes, and cute pajamas are always appreciated.

Gift Ideas for Beauty Junkies

Beauty junkies know their makeup, so pay attention to the brands they wear. Beauty books are great for getting inspiration, and Bobbi Brown offers great advice in hers. Sephora is currently offering sampler kits that include top selling products such as mascara, lipstick, and perfume, and they are perfect for gift giving.

Gift Ideas for DIYers

The Do It Yourself phenomenon covers everything from building a house to baking a cake or sewing a dress. Encourage hands-on hobbies with kits focused on knitting, crocheting, and just about everything else. Also, Threadbanger offers tons of great ideas for DIYers and is encouraging people to give handmade gifts this year.

Food for Thought

Edited by Ashe Mischief

This is my first time editing since I wrote Good Cop/Bad Cop: Participating in Links a la Mode. Thank you all so much for making this my most pleasurable experience in editing yet!

I’m not sure if it’s because American Thanksgiving is a week away, or because the blogosphere is ablaze with Kate Mosses’ unforgettable quote, “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels,” but either way, I’ve got food on my mind. This week, you brought me the best kind of food–rich, decadent, and 100% calorie-free! That’s right–you delivered highly thoughtful posts on fashion, fashion blogging & communities, and more.

On a personal note, ferOHHHsh has asked that we share her post about her close friend’s near-fatal accident. I believe that the fashion community is one of surprising strength, dignity, caring and compassion, and that it was worth sharing. We’re sending your friend speedy thoughts for a wonderful recovery!

Guide to Los Angeles

Winter is coming, and I am trying to remember why I left sunny L.A. for a state that boasts about cloudy skies and freezing temperatures. Whether you live in L.A. or just go there to visit, The City of Angeles has something for everyone - movie stars, beaches, shopping, smog...

Shopping
  • The Grove – Shopping, dining, the best place for people watching, The Grove is where you go to scope out Angelenos and perhaps catch a movie filming.
  • The Americana - Like The Grove but located in Glendale.
  • The Original Farmer’s Market – If you're not careful, you might mistake this market as part of The Grove, but The Original Farmer’s Market has its own unique vibe. Tourist shops, Pinkberry, and as much produce and candy you can eat, The Market is, also, home to The Gumbo Pot (Stall #312), the best Cajun cooking in town.
  • Chinatown - I must confess that I still haven't seen the movie, Chinatown, but at night the area does get a little... sketchy. However, Chinatown is definitely worth a day trip and offers plenty of souvenirs.
  • El Pueblo de Los Angeles - I stumbled on this treasure trove on my way to Union Station and promised myself I'd go back for another look. It's a town within a town and the birthplace of Los Angeles.
  • Universal City Walk – Bowling, dancing, eating, shopping, City Walk offers it all. Favorite stops are: The Los Angeles Sock Market, Hard Rock Café, Lush Cosmetics, and Jillian’s Hi Life Lanes.
Eats
  • Pink’s Hot Dogs – Advertised as “The Hot Dog to the Stars”, Pink’s has been around since 1939. I highly recommend the Guadalajara Dog and the Lord of the “Rings” Dog. While the hot dogs are very filling, be prepared for a long wait; Pink’s is always busy.
  • In-n-Out Burger – Ordering is easy with your choice of hamburger, fries, and milk shake. Worth every calorie.
  • Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles – Chicken and waffles you ask? Yes, it really is amazing.
Entertainment
  • Hollywood Boulevard – Start at Hollywood & Hilghland, home of the Kodak Theatre and gift shops galore - it’s across the street from El Capitan Theatre and next door to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. Then make your way down the Walk of Fame. I highly recommend taking a bus tour of Hollywood.
  • Warner Bros. Studio - Warner Bros. Studio is the best studio in my mind. While there is talk about closing the studio and moving it out of state, I really hope that doesn’t happen because it still has some of that Old Hollywood feel to it. Check out the water tower – just like in the cartoons!
  • LA Connection Comedy Theatre – Improv and sketch comedy inside an incredibly small theatre. I studied here for a few months and it was amazing.
  • Crunch - A gym as entertainment? I have three words for you: ANTIGRAVITY® YOGA ‘WINGS’.
  • Santa Monica Pier – The water, the Ferris wheel, the little shops, yes it’s touristy but I love it.

Capsule Wardrobe

Planning a capsule wardrobe is a great way to take stock of what you have in your closet and to discover what you need. Basically, you want every item to be able to work in at least two different outfits. For instance, a capsule wardrobe should contain:
1 pair black pants
1 black skirt
1 black jacket
3 different colored tops

With the right accessories, these six items can take you from school to the office and then out for the weekend. Buying good quality basics will save you money, and by focusing on accessories, you can quickly change your look and stay on trend without spending a fortune.

DIY Gift Idea: Ninja Notepad

Here's an easy DIY gift idea that is great for people who like notebooks... and ninjas.

Supplies:
flip top black notebook (I used a Moleskin)
flesh colored felt
black acrylic paint or puffy paint (I used acrylic but I think puffy paint would be better)
paintbrush
googly eyes
hot glue gun/glue sticks

How To:
1. Cut an oval out of the felt for the face.
2. Glue oval to front of clean notebook.
3. Glue googly eyes to oval.
4. Trace around oval with black paint to give face a finished edge.
5. Let dry.

This project took me about 30 minutes to make and was made for under $10.

Go Fashion Bloggers, Go!

Edited by Debutante Clothing

As more and more print magazines fold, bloggers seem to be growing in professionalism and media legitimacy. When bloggers such as Previously Owned and kaKofonie Of si(gh)lenS can get the scoop on international designers, you know the fashion playing field is being leveled. If bloggers can host great giveaways like Retro Chick’s, I wonder why the FTC needs to play big brother. Fashion Pulse Daily wants to know if you even care. It seems we are becoming the pretty, little websites that could. Yay bloggers!

The Look: $100 or Less

I get tired of reading magazine articles that claim to put together a look for under $100 when what they really mean is that each piece costs less than $100. Today I made it my mission to create an entire look for $100 or less, and thanks to Forever 21, my mission is accomplished.

Fall Coats

There's a nip in the air, which means it is time to start reaching for a fall coat that will keep you warm until the snow falls.
This Red Rover Coat from ModCloth is perfect for a date or to add a little sass on your way to the office.

The Prairie Underground Long Cloak Hoodie from Tobi makes a great weekend look.

Have a movie night and complete your outfit with the Twilight Jacket from FredFlare.

The Belstaff® leather bomber jacket from J. Crew looks great with jeans but can, also, toughen up a floaty dress.

Available in several different colors, the Emma Hooded Toggle Coat w/Thinsulate from Delia's is a great option for work and play.
