Fall Preview

With September only days away, I'm digging through boxes trying to find my autumn weather clothes. While my credit card is whispering excuses for why I need a whole new wardrobe, I'd be happy to splurge on these five key pieces.

1. The Bomber Jacket

2. Velvet

3. Satchel Bags

4. Double-Finger Rings

5. Ankle Boots

Looking Forward to Looking Back for Fall

Edited by: Ann of Holier than Now
Every season begins with looking back: the designers revisit trends of yore, and we fling open our oversized Tupperware bins and dig through the back of our closets to see just what it was we wore this time last year. Despite the thrill of new trends, most of us probably feel that the first Fall shopping we should do is in our own closet (View from 5 ft. 2 and Your Saving Style inspire on this front). Next step: after considering your bank account, and perhaps the pros and cons of fast fashion (see: Consumerism Killed My Soul), a visit to your local thrift store or flea market for vintage finds might replace that mall excursion you were imagining. With a wealth of inspiration from the blogosphere, there's never been a better time to invest in - or just be inspired by - style from the past.

    School Supplies

I love shopping for school supplies. Filling my cart with new pens, notebooks, and highlighters is so satisfying. It's like preparing for an adventure because you never know what the new school year will hold. Even though I am not in school right now, I'm dreaming of buying the Coach Poppy Sequins Backpack and filling it with "necessities" such as an ipad, a Vera Bradley notebook, and a cute pencil case.

What's on your back to school list?

    M.A.C. Mineralize SPF 15 Foundation

The hunt for the perfect foundation that you can wear everyday and not breakout has come to an end. I've been using the M.A.C. Mineralize Foundation SPF 15 since March and love it. While $32 is more than what I usually spend on foundation, this one is worth it. The creamy, buildable coverage works well on my combination skin, which means no flaking and no breakouts. I love that this foundation is packed with minerals and makes me feel like I'm doing something good for my skin. I mentioned the Mineralize Foundation in my Favorite April Beauty Products video but had to give another shout out because I love this so much.

    What's your favorite foundation?

    Lady Vernon and Her Daughter

I just finished reading Jane Rubino and Caitlen Rubino-Bradway's Lady Vernon and Her Daughter, a retelling of Jane Austen's Lady Susan. While I liked how Lady Vernon and Her Daughter captured Austen's style, I'm disappointed that Lady Susan is transformed from a calculating coquette into a damsel in distress. Instead of a captivating social climber, Lady Susan Vernon is a loving wife and mother who must shift for herself when her husband dies. Much like in Sense and Sensibility, Lady Vernon and her daughter, Frederica, are dependent on a male relation who refuses to offer them financial assistance or acknowledge that it is his duty to provide for these helpless women. I think if I had not read Lady Susan first I would have enjoyed this novel more.

    Goody Simple Styles Giveaway

When I first heard about the Goody Simple Styles updo kit, I was excited to try it because any help in creating a secure twist or bun is a blessing. The Simple Styles kit includes the Modern Updo Pin, Spin Pins, Volume Boost Comb, and Pony Pouf Clip. Also, included is a storage pouch and style guide. The kit I used is for dark hair.

The Goody Simple Styles updo kit

The Modern Updo using the Modern Updo Pin

Since I have thick, shoulder-length hair, I was curious to see if the Modern Updo Pin would keep this twist secure, and happily, it did.

The Soft Spin using the Spin Pins

The Spin Pins are like screws for your bun. My hair is a little too short and layered for these to work properly, but the pins will be great when my hair is a little longer.

The Pony Boost using the Volume Boost Comb

I did not notice much of a boost with the Volume Boost Comb, but my ponytail did feel more secure and that is always a good thing.

The Half-up Pony Pouf using the Pony Pouf Clip

My hair is too thick to use the Pony Pouf Clip for securing a ponytail, but this clip was great for the half-up ponytail.

Overall, my favorites were the Modern Updo Pin and the Pony Pouf Clip. If you would like to try the Goody Simple Styles updo kit, I am a giving away one kit for light hair.

    Lacey Days

I consider lace to be one of the prettiest imitations ever made of the fantasy of nature; lace always evokes for me those incomparable designs which the branches and leaves of trees embroider across the sky, and I do not think that any invention of the human spirit could have a more graceful or precise origin.
    -Coco Chanel, April 29, 1939

Enjoy the last few weeks of summer by spending your days in a white lace dress. ASOS is having a great sale right now and is worth perusing. For fall, toughen up your lace dress by paring it with a leather jacket, opaque tights, and ankle boots.

    Back to Beauty School

Head to the top of the class with beauty products designed to last throughout the day. These products are on my wish list, so let me know if you've tried them and if you liked them.

I'm a sucker for butterflies, so the packaging immediately caught my attention. The palette includes 5 eyeshadows, 2 blush colors, and 1 bronzing powder all made without yucky Parabens, Sulfates, Phthalates, etc.

This waterproof lengthening, curling, volumizing, and conditioning mascara is guaranteed to last through any rain, sweat, or tears you may face, and it's, also, made without Parabens, Sulfates, Phthalates, etc.

This setting spray will keep your makeup in place for up to 16 hours and even has Temperature Control Technology to prevent meltdowns and makeup dehydration. The All-Nighter promises a lot, and I am eager to know if this works because I may have just found my new makeup saver.

The sleek ponytail always eludes me, but The Ponytail™ Styling Lotion promises to tame fly-aways and impart shine. I'm already sold.

These brushes are so cute! The set includes Mozzarella Eyeshadow Brush, Adios Amigos Crease Brush, and Donutella Angled Eyeliner Brush. Perfect for any homeroom touchups.

    Fall Inspiration: Peter Som

    All photos style.com

The other day I received a great comment from Tessa, who was wondering what my opinion on trends are. She asked, "Do you tend to follow what the magazines & runways show? What does 'getting designer looks for less' mean to you- the opportunity to replicate, or interpret?"

For me, trends are a starting point not a hard rule. If bright orange is "in" but I hate wearing bright orange, I'm going to skip that trend, but I might wear other bright colors. Trends should work for you and not make you feel uncomfortable. While I look to magazines and runway shows for inspiration, I rarely have the desire to completely replicate a look. For instance, I am in love with Peter Som's fall collection, but I would focus on finding similar accessories instead of copying one of his eclectic looks head to toe. I like runway inspired accessories because they quickly update outfits I already own and are relatively inexpensive.

To get Peter Som's look for less, start with a quirky cloche. Urban Outfitter's Wooden Ships Scalloped Edge Knit Cloche is one of my favorites. Since layering is key, top a floral blouse off with J. Crew's Cashmere V-neck cardigan and an Urban Renewal Western Leather Belt. Dr. Martens 1914 Rocker is perfect for toughening up this girly look, and ebay's wide selection of faux fur coats is the perfect place to nab a show-stopping coat on the cheap. If you're feeling daring, get the dark runway lip with Smashbox's Photo Finish Lipstick in Enchanting topped with their Lip Enhancing Gloss in Sultry.

    Now Trending: Fall

I can't believe it's time to get ready for fall again. Even though I am not looking forward to autumn's gray skies, I am excited about some of the trends that I am seeing for this season. Texture is key whether you splurge on a shearling bomber jacket, velvet accessories, or a creamy lipstick. While the economy is still teetering on the brink, fall's runways were dripping in luxury. Stay tuned for ways to get designer looks for less.

What trends are you looking forward to this fall?
