Life Needs More Sparkle

Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.
~Nathaniel Hawthorne

A butterfly is an amazing creature, often described by poets as the "flying flower." Tarina Tarantino's "Aunt Viola" Butterfly Pendant Necklace captures the beauty and grace of this marvelous winged creature by using "glass pearls, lucite and cloisonné beads, and a large wooden butterfly pendant studded with Swarovski crystals." At least this butterfly won't fly away.

Spotted Moth's Pumpkin Pie Dress

Autumn is the perfect time to curl up with a book and a mug of hot tea or cider. With the leaves changing and a sudden nip in the air, I couldn't resist doing a little fall shopping. Earlier this year, I discovered Spotted Moth, and fell in love with their vintage-y collection of dresses. After much debating with myself over the benefits of saving versus spending, I bought the Pumpkin Pie Dress, a rust colored dress with an all over yellow floral print. The dress arrived wrapped in brown paper and tied up with colorful string and little pink "Admit One" tickets. I love that the dress is fully lined and is quite comfortable to wear. At the moment, I think I could wear it every day. Paired with black lace tights and brown wedges, this dress is perfect for enjoying a beautiful autumn day.

Saturday Haul

Here's a peak at some of the things that have come home with me over the last few weeks.

A fabulous hat I had my eyes on all summer that I bought at an amazing discount.

My love for animal jewelry and double-finger rings combined in this awesome statement piece.

Because Breakfast at Tiffany's is a wonderful classic, and who could resist a look behind the scenes?

Are You a Follower of Fashion?

Edited by: Ann of Holier than Now

Last week marked the end of New York Fashion Week. Post-show, the editors, buyers and bloggers went to work to define and list the trends, hoping we'll follow along. But for many of us, the sheer shirts of Spring '11 were are about as realistic for our wardrobes as a meat dress. Instead, we looked outside of Lincoln Center at the street style of individuals, hoping to find the inspiration to zig when everyone else is zagging. This week's post celebrates the path less ... followed, with counterpoints on everything from current trends to blogger compensation and competition.

    Fall Uniform

I'm not sure how it happened, but sometime during the last couple of years I developed a fall uniform. Truth be told I am content to dress like this all year round, but people look at one funny when it is 90 degrees and you are wearing a sweater. My fall uniform consists of jeggings or leggings, the stylish cousins of sweatpants, worn with tunic tops and boyfriend cardigans. Slouchy beanies and berets are excellent for days when I don't care to do my hair, which is most days, and a large bag is perfect for toting around my life. Right now I can't get enough of double-finger rings and am a sucker for quirky stud earrings. While I'm petite, I prefer to wear flats but admit I have a soft spot for leg-lengthening over-the-knee boots. After slipping on black, over-sized shades, I am ready to head out the door.

    What's In My Bag

I love reading other bloggers' "what's in my bag" posts, yet I've never done one myself. After reading bag posts by Cafe Fashionista and All Lacquered Up, I decided it was time to do one myself.

I have had this bag over a year. It's survived trips to Chicago and days on set and has managed to not fall apart - pretty impressive for a cheap handbag. The best part about this bag is the compartment tray on the bottom because there is a place to put everything.

The Tech Gear - TomTom GPS and BlackBerry Curve

I would be lost without my GPS, and my BlackBerry is great for staying connected when I'm on the go.

The Beauty Goods - MAC Blot Powder, Sigma mirror, Avon hand lotion and Bug Guard, Nic's Sticks, Victoria Secret's sanitizing hand gel, Victoria Secret's lip gloss, GAP lip balm, Carmex lip balm, MAC Slimshine Lipstick, Conair foldable brush, tissues, Colgate Wisp

Just the basics so I can touch up when I am away from home. I can never have enough lip balm and lip gloss with me, so my lip stash is constantly changing.

The Miscellaneous - Fossil wallet, H&M sunglasses, ila Dusk Personal Alarm, playing cards, notepad, pen, candy, book

I am a big believer in cheap sunglasses because I am always breaking mine. H&M is my favorite place to shop for trendy sunglasses. I always have a book or magazine with me, and I am currently reading Patrick O'Brian's Post Captain from the Master and Commander series.

    What's in your bag?

Influences, Impressions, and Interpretations of Fashion and what it all means

Edited by: Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista

It is without a doubt that fashion makes the world go round. Just last week, Fashion's Night Out helped revive the economy, fashion week's across the world bring together old friends, new friends, and those in between. Technology fused with fashion now offers inside perspectives- once only exclusively shared. Adding to this breath of fashion are those who blog.

This week's roundup offers a retrospect of fashion as New York Fashion Week comes to a close, designers have teased us with what's to come, and the world comes back to life- the fashion blogger's mind only now begins to race with influences, impressions, and interpretations of Fall Fashion and what it all means...

    Shoes for Crews

Working on a movie set means being on your feet for long periods of time. After one particularly long day as a stand in, I went home and researched shoes that were comfortable for standing in all day and discovered Shoes for Crews. I ordered the Falcon, a cross-trainer with removable cushioned insoles and a slip-resistant outsole, and wore them for a month of filming. I really think these shoes are the best $30 I've spent. While the shoes are a little chunky, they really helped with the back pain I was having and still look great after weeks spent outside in all sorts of weather. Comfortable and affordable, I recommend checking out the Falcon if you are on your feet all day.

    Alexa Chung for Madewell

While the world is abuzz with talk of the spring runway, I am still planning my fall wardrobe. The air is starting to get crisp, and in a few weeks, I will not be able to leave the house without several layers and a jacket. Here are a few of my favorite looks from the Alexa Chung for Madewell collection. The dresses would look great paired with chunky tights, ankle booties, and a lambswool coat.

    Sigma Heart Shaped Mirror

It's no secret that I am a sucker for anything that sparkles, so when I saw Sigma's Heart Shaped Mirror, it was love. Sigma sent me the mirror in Cleopatra to review, and I'm really happy with the quality of the mirror. I was curious to see if the rhinestones would easily fall off but so far that has not been the case. Plus, the mirror comes in a small velvet bag which is convenient since the mirror takes much abuse in my already overflowing bag. I, also, like how the mirror is small enough to fit in my hand but includes a regular mirror and a magnified mirror - so important for on the go touch ups.

    Murder at Mansfield Park

I just finished reading Lynn Shepherd's Murder at Mansfield Park for the Everything Austen II challenge and am so sad to have finished it because it was that good. Forget everything you know about Jane Austen's Mansfield Park and pretend she rewrote it as a murder mystery. Fanny Price is no longer the meek, good girl while Mary Crawford is the downtrodden heroine. When Fanny is brutally murdered, Mary sets out to solve the mystery. Intrigue, suspense, and a happy ending make this novel worth reading.

    Saturday Haul

This past week has been full of little goodies. Last year I read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and loved it, so I finally swapped for it on swap.com. I'm smitten with my new phone, a BlackBerry Curve and this cute case which I found on amazon. Marvel's Sense and Sensibility is so pretty to flip through and makes for delightful reading. Finally, special thanks to Velvet from vvb32 reads for the Unicorn Wishes Journal!

What goodies did you find this week?

The End of Summer? No! The Beginning of Awesome!

Edited by: Thom of The Sunday Best

For the past week I've been listening to Cee-Lo Green's fantastic send-off, F@#* You, and little else. At the same time I've been reading a lot of the hand-wringing in the press about bloggers and whatever are we going to do about them, along with our responses both here and on our blogs. And the two have combined in my head to form a single determination - bloggers need more swagger. I don't mean anger, of the you-don't-respect-us variety, or apologetics, of the we-are-as-legitimate-as-other-media variety. I mean swagger, the kind of swagger that comes from doing something well and knowing you're good at it. So whatever other themes might knit together this week's links, they all share that important characteristic - swagger. Step up to the plate, knock it out of the park.
